Marines hold field meet in Chicopee

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Marines conducted their annual field meet at Chicopee High School on Saturday.

Four hundred and fifty enlistees from Western Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island competed on the field and got a taste of boot camp along with it.

The event, which is designed to build camaraderie and strengthen character, puts the enlistees through physical challenges such as pull-ups and sit-ups.

They capped the day off with a tug-of-war contest.

Organizers said it was exciting to see the Marines of tomorrow in action.

"Even though a lot of the services are getting smaller, we still have these kids," said Maj. Scott Welch. "Whether it be high school or high school graduates that are ready and willing to work for their country to serve their country and do great things in the Marine Corps, they are willing to sacrifice self-interests for the sake of a team, and that's really what we're looking for as a Marine Corps."

To really get the boot camp feel, drill instructors were brought in from Paris Island to help motivate the enlistees.
