A driver who was swerving all over Worthington Street, striking the curbs on each side of the road early Wednesday morning was arrested for his third DUI.
Police were patrolling downtown about 12:30 a.m. when they saw a black Mercedes travel by them while failing to maintain a lane, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.
"If allowed to drive any farther, the driver of the car was going to kill someone or himself," Delaney said.
Officers were able to get the Benz pulled over, but the driver, identified as 34-year-old Carlos Rivera, was unable to walk or talk when police spoke to him, Delaney said.
Rivera, of 60 Herbert Ave., Springfield, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol (third offence) and he was issued a marked lane violation.
"Springfield police officers will be out in force this holiday weekend looking for drunk and high drivers and enforcing all traffic violations," Delaney stated in a news release. "Please drive safely."
