Mom of 11-year-old accused of RVA school bomb threat: 'It's not him'

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A Richmond mother is fighting to clear her son's name. Her 11-year-old is accused of calling in a bomb threat at J.L. Francis Elementary School.

"That's my son," said Doreatha Redd with tears in her eyes. "This is serious. It's not him. No. It's no way."

Redd's son, Jameil, rides the bus. She says the timing of the alleged bomb threat is noteworthy.

"They stated that a call came out around 7:35 am," said Redd. "He didn't leave my home until 8:15 am. I don't know how this is possible."

Redd says her cell phone is the only home phone. She claims her son did not use her phone Friday morning, and she says there are no calls to 911 on her phone.

"I even offered the school my phone to go through it," said Redd. "To see what they can find."

She allowed us to speak with Jameil.

"What do you want people to know?" we asked Jameil.

"That I didn't call for the bomb threat," said Jameil who claims he knows who did.

"He had the phone and then he went to the back of the building," said Jameil about a fellow student. "He said, 'yall Jameil just called the cops...and he made a bomb threat.'"

Parents trying to drop off their kids were turned around and sent to Elkhardt Middle while a bomb squad searched the building. Jamiel was placed in a police car.

"You're saying someone lied on you?" we asked.

"Yes," replied Jamiel.

"A student?" we asked.

"Yes," he replied.

Mom is pledging to fight the allegations.

"Because my son is traumatized," said Redd. "He is nervous, and he is embarrassed. I don't like that."

Richmond police are investigating the allegations. The school system notes the family can file a formal appeal. A school official says Jamiel will be able to make up his SOL Test...pending the outcome of the investigation.
