Wilbraham police say they are continuing to receive reports of residents receiving telephone calls from scammers trying to solicit money.
Authorities say a caller states that a relative is in trouble and is requiring the target to wire the scammer money in order to secure their safe return.
Residents have reported they have been told, in one case, that the person's brother was being held for ransom at knifepoint, and there was another report of the person's husband being held at gunpoint.
The calls appear to come from a local number, but police say it is actually spoofed, meaning it is displayed differently than the caller's actual number.
Police in Ludlow also recently said residents there have been receiving similar calls, and the caller has, in some cases, reported the relative had been in a car accident.
If you receive a call like this, obtain as much information as you can, and contact the authorities.
Police will be able to check on your relative's safety.
