Springfield police initially responded to a Shotspotter activation that notified officers that at least six shots were fired near Oak Street and Union Street a little before midnight on Monday.
"Officers at the scene determined that the shots were in the immediate vicinity, she was running away attempting to get away from the shots being fired. There were several people at that location," said Sergeant John Delaney with the Springfield Police Department.
More officers were called in for crowd control.
No witnesses are cooperating with police and no one gave any description of the shooter.
Clarke was pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center just after midnight upon arrival.
Delaney said officers believe the victim was not shot at 550 Union St.
Springfield's Old Hill neighborhood has been the site of three other homicides within the past two years.
"It's labeled as a high crime area, our sector officers pay special attention to that area, it's given a lot of attention by extra detail officers that are in the area, walking patrol. We know this is an area that's had several gang-related shootings and drug-related shootings," said Delaney.
Springfield police continue to find the shooter.
