An international boxing championship match is scheduled to be held in Springfield.

It was announced on Thursday that the John Boyle O'Reilly Club will be hosting the championship event at their Progress Avenue location.

A team of Irish amateur international boxers will to take on an American team, comprising of local United States Olympic hopefuls from throughout the Northeast.

The event will take place in a specially constructed outdoor boxing ring in the parking lot of the club in East Springfield.

Eric Devine, president of the club, said spectators are in for a great show.

"You can expect to see some of the greatest fighters on the planet. There will be fighters from Ireland, fighters from America and Olympic hopefuls from America. There's actually a young man from Springfield who will be fighting. He's fighting for the Junior Olympic Bought. It's going to be an excellent day for the community," Devine said.
