Holyoke residents react to school bus crash

Posted: Updated:

It was a parent's worst nightmare, as a school bus was involved in a scary crash at a busy intersection Friday afternoon.

The accident was at Lincoln and Pleasant Streets just after 3 p.m.

Officials said it looked a lot worse than the minor injuries that came from it.

"It was like an explosion," said Carmen Santiago, who lives just a few houses down from the scene.

Thirty E.N. White Elementary School students were inside.

Santiago said she immediately ran to the bus and brought the children to safety along with several of her neighbors.

"I heard the kids yelling and crying and I saw people running that way coming toward this way, so I ran down the stairs to see what happened," said Santiago. "I saw the school bus and I worried and started running down here."

"When our crews arrived on scene they said it was very organized," said Capt. Anthony Cerruti of the Holyoke Fire Department. "The students were already off the bus, the driver had them off on the sidewalk away from the site."

Nine students were taken to Holyoke Medical Center, along with the driver of both the bus and the truck, owned by a Martins and Sons Construction in Ludlow.

Officials said students suffered minor bumps and bruises.

An employee of the school bus company said he credits the bus itself and the way it is engineered.

"It took an impact right on the floor line which is probably the strongest point, which is a good thing because it looks like everyone is going to be okay," said Stephen Schmuck of Durham Bus Services.

Holyoke Medical Center told CBS 3 that everyone has been released as of 11 p.m.

Phone calls made to the construction company whose truck hit the bus have not been returned.
