On Sunday afternoon, Democratic candidate for governor Don Berwick held a town hall forum at the Clarion hotel.
The former Medicare chief under President Barack Obama was in town discussing his platform of a single-payer healthcare system.
Prior to addressing the packed room, Berwick told CBS 3 that a single-payer system is the next step in the evolution of healthcare for the commonwealth.
"We were the first state to make healthcare a human right in 2006," said Berwick. "We can be the first state to consolidate our payment into a single pool that will simplify things for doctors, nurses and hospitals, for patients and families. The other thing it will do, if we have one source of payment, we can speak up for patients."
Berwick is confident that he will receive the necessary 15 percent of delegates at the Democratic convention in Worcester in two weeks.
That would guarantee him a spot on the primary ballot in September.
