The Big Y World Class Supermarket in the city's Allen and Cooley neighborhood was evacuated after a fire broke out in the kitchen Monday morning.
Springfield firefighters were called to the Big Y at 300 Cooley St. about 11:30 a.m. after an automatic alarm was activated, according to Executive Aid to the Fire Commissioner Dennis Ledger.
A fryolater set off the alarm because of an accumulation of flammable products in the exhaust system, Ledger said.
Big Y staff and customers were evacuated for about 30 minutes, but the damage was minimal, Ledger said.
Health department officials assisted and any open food in the area was discarded.
