While support grows online for a suspect accused of killing a convicted sex offender, those allegedly caught in his crossfire say he put innocent lives at risk.
Jay Maynor is accused of shooting and killing Raymond Brooks, a convicted sex offender accused of molesting a child related to both Maynor and Brooks.
There's a Facebook page called "Friends, family and supporters of Jay Maynor" where hundreds of people are coming together to rally around Maynor and raise money to help him post his bond. One post on the page says "Jay is not a killer, he's just a man that loves his children."
But FOX6 News met some people who are not on Maynor's side.
Cullman County detectives say before going to Brooks' home and allegedly killing him, Maynor stopped on his motorcycle at the Berlin Plaza Quick Stop and opened fire from the parking lot. Detectives say he was shooting at his step-daughter's boyfriend.
"I heard a gunshot and everybody was running to the back," employee Mike Hays said.
Hays says the man that Maynor was shooting at ran into the store for safety and Maynor also went inside looking for him.
"I walked over there got my gun and was holding it in my hand. [Maynor] just looked at me, turned and walked out the door," Hays said.
Store Owner Chris Abbott showed FOX6 News a bullet hole in the building allegedly from the shooting. He says there were people inside the store during the shooting including children.
"The bullet could have hurt someone other than who the shooter intended," Abbott said.
