Armed with a sawed-off shotgun, an enraged boyfriend broke into his girlfriend's house and chased her and her 24-month-old niece down with the weapon before he pointed it at them early Wednesday morning.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, police responded to 16 Princeton St. at 12:15 a.m. after someone reported that the victim's boyfriend was outside her home with a shotgun attempting to break in.

When police arrived they spotted the man on the second-floor porch, but when he saw police he unsuccessfully attempted to flee out a first-floor door, Delaney said.

The 41-year-old victim told police that she and her boyfriend had been together for one year, and when he left late Tuesday night she told him not to come back. The boyfriend, identified as 35-year-old Wajid Lowe, didn't listen, and returned an hour later with the illegal weapon, Delaney said.

The victim and her niece hid as Lowe initially attempted to break into the residence, but they fled when he gained entry to the home.

Lowe was charged with two counts of assault by means of a dangerous weapon, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, armed home invasion, carrying a firearm, carrying a firearm with a three prior violent offences, possession of a firearm with a felony and malicious damage, according to an arrest report.

"Great job by the officers getting this dangerous individual and gun off the streets," Delaney said.

Lowe was held overnight on high bail and was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Springfield District Court.
