Chicopee High soccer team raising funds for matches in Ireland

Posted: Updated:

One local high school soccer team is prepping for a trip overseas.

The Chicopee High School boys soccer team held a car wash Saturday behind First American Insurance on Front Street.

The group leaves in three weeks for Ireland, where they will play three matches against teams over there.

The squad's goal is to raise $16,000 to fund the trip.

They are currently about $2,500 shy of that goal.

Chicopee's coach said the school hosted a team from Ireland back in the 1960s.

"A lot of club teams do this, but for a high school team to go over seas is pretty unique," said Tom Rivet, coach of the team. "We're very excited for this. It's something that hasn't been done before. We are a bunch of guys from Chicopee going over to Ireland, so it's very exciting."

Twenty-one players are going on the trip, joined by 21 chaperones.

The team will be holding another car wash next Sunday at Ron's Formal Wear on Memorial Drive.
