GOP congressional candidate Dave Brat breaks silence

Posted: Updated:

Dave Brat started his official election campaign Tuesday, one week after turning heads by defeating incumbent Eric Cantor.

Brat's week-long sequester came to an end with his first public appearance since winning the Republican nomination last week.

"Today we are hitting the ground running meeting with people across the 7th district," Brat said.

Brat and newly-appointed Communications Director Brian Gottstein say it's full steam ahead from here on out. Brat met with members of the 7th district at the Midlothian Rotary Club breakfast. While he did not speak to the crowd, he did address the media briefly to lay out his intentions.

"We've got a message of economic prosperity that we are going to share with Central Virginians across the district over the coming weeks," Brat said. "This morning I'm just glad to be here at this Rotary breakfast to listen to the people of my district."

Gottstein, who started working for the campaign Sunday, said for the past few days they have also been working to beef up the campaign team. The group doesn't have computers or working phones. They hope to be up and running very soon. He says right now the group of staffers numbers less than 20 people.

"It is pretty hectic over there right now, just lots of people coming in and out a lot of people wanting to help so those numbers are going to change by the day," Gottstein said.

Brat is expected to make his first public address this Thursday at the Hanover GOP meeting.
