PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A 58-year-old Phoenix man has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing a Phoenix woman to death nearly 25 years ago.
Cudellious Love was arrested Friday by Phoenix police and booked into jail on one count of first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Laura Hunding in July 1989.
Police said detectives on the case were recently able to match DNA at the crime scene with Love.
Hunding's body was found by her landlord in her apartment about 10:30 a.m. on July 17, 1989.
Witnesses said they saw her leave and return to her Phoenix home alone from an Alcoholics Anonymous dance at Scottsdale Community College two days before.
Detectives found an empty knife sheath, but were never able to recover the knife. All potential leads in the case were exhausted and the case went cold, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
In 2001, detectives of the Phoenix Police Cold Case Squad reopened the case.
Retired Detective Art Scott and retired Detective Bill Stuebe, currently a Maricopa County Attorney's Office investigator, reviewed the case file, according to the attorney's office.
Several pieces of evidence from the 1989 investigation were submitted to the Phoenix Crime Lab for advanced forensic analysis not available at the time of the murder.
In 2012, Phoenix Police Detective J.J. Alberta followed up on the work, and the DNA linking Love to the slaying was matched in January. Love was interviewed on May 12, denying any knowledge of the homicide.
DNA swabs were collected from Love to confirm the previous crime lab results, and the match was confirmed Friday.
He was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail.
"Thanks to the hard work and persistence of our partners at the Phoenix Police Department and Phoenix Crime Lab, as well as the assistance of the FBI, we are now able to move forward with the effort to hold someone accountable for the brutal murder of an innocent young woman," Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said.
