Brewer signs 'out of this world' bill

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed a bill that could help you travel into space one day.

She did it during a visit to a space engineering company in Tucson.

It goes beyond innovation in getting people to space; It creates an industry of taking passengers there.

The governor signed into law Arizona's way of recognizing two consenting parties can have a contract for commercial space flight. The law then allows World View, the company coordinating the balloon flights that go up 19 miles, to have insurance on such flights.

The governor has reservations about the bill but sees this as another opportunity for business in the state.

"I have to be honest with you, when I first heard of the bill, I thought it was a little out of the world. You know, what have they done now?" she said. "But then when you get educated on it, and hear about it, you talk to legislators about it. You know, it's just amazing where we've come and where we're headed."

Lawmakers expect the law to prove more flexible for business than what Texas and New Mexico crafted.
