Holyoke teachers, parents and community members are protesting the firing of a Holyoke teacher.
They gathered outside Monday night's school committee meeting to protest the school department's decision not to renew the teaching contract of Gus Morales.
They say that Morales' contract was not renewed after he spoke out about the use of data walls within the Holyoke school system.
"This isn't just about me. What we are talking about is that this is an attack on the union. When you don't have somebody who can speak freely, you don't have a strong idea of what it means to be a democracy. Especially within the public schools. If I can't tell the administration what's wrong with the schools, how do we ever fix it?" Morales said.
No decision was made on Monday night concerning the status of Morales' contract with the Holyoke school system.
A spokesperson for the Massachusetts Teachers Association says that the union is looking at all possible options.
