A New London woman is being charged with stabbing her 4-month-old nephew in the buttocks during a domestic incident in May.
New London police said they arrested Brittany Melendez, 23, at about 4 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The domestic incident happened on May 23 on Ledge Road in New London, police said, which resulted in the child being stabbed.
The baby's mother, Desiree Hamlin, said her sister Brittany Melendez was staying at her home with her boyfriend for a few days last month.
"They would watch my child while I was at work," Hamlin said.
One of those nights, the couple had a fight and Hamlin said Melendez charged at her boyfriend with a sharp object.
"I'm not sure how the boyfriend was holding my son. I'm not sure if he picked up my son while she was coming toward him, I don't know, I wasn't here," Hamlin said.
Police haven't said what the weapon that was used was.
Hamlin and her husband got home moments after the incident and rushed 4-month-old Kymani to the hospital where he was stitched up and released. Hamlin said he healed nicely, and how it is time for her sister to be held accountable.
Melendez was charged with second-degree assault, criminal attempt at first degree assault, first degree reckless endangerment, two counts risk of injury to a minor, possession of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct.
She was held on a $150,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Her next court date will be on July 9.
