Family holds birthday vigil for children who vanished after 2012 fire

Posted: Updated:

Instead of a typical birthday party, a family hosted a vigil in honor of two missing children.

Chloie Leverette and Gage Daniel vanished in September 2012 after a house fire in Bedford County. Investigators found the remains of their grandparents, but no one ever located the children's bodies.

Both children celebrated birthdays this week. Gage celebrates his ninth birthday on June 29, while Chloie turned 11 on June 23.

Armed with balloons, pictures and banners, friends and family gathered at the Bedford County Agriculture Center in Shelbyville to celebrate the births of their two loved ones. They even brought a vanilla cake with butter cream frosting - the kids' favorite.

The children's mother said this week is the most difficult she must endure. But the family said they still believe the kids are alive.

"We think about them daily and it takes you back to the very beginning when it happened and it just repeats itself over and over in your mind, so we need closure,"said Mary Lamb, a relative.

The group released dozens of balloons outside the center.

A spokesperson for the TBI has said they continue to pursue any new leads; the Amber Alert that was initially issued remains active, but there has been no evidence of foul play.
