Local boxer in a fight that goes beyond the ring

Posted: Updated:

Army solider Donvana Lee is fighter, but fighting for her country is just one bout out of many the 22-year-old is going through.  Lee is also a newly crowned Women's Amateur Super Heavyweight Champion.  She is a New York native, who is currently stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base.  Lee won the Battle of the Universe in Rayne,LA this past weekend.

Lee says that she's been fighting all her life and her last championship is just the beginning of her adventure.  "I'm not scared of weight are none of that. I've been fighting people bigger than me all my life so I already knew I had to go in there for war so that's what I went in there for," she said as she described the semi-final fight against a much bigger opponent.

At 5-feet, 6 inches tall, Lee was 50 pounds lighter and 6 inches taller than her opponent Deseree Sellers.

"Ididn'tt want Donvana Lee in a situation where she would get caught on the chin and go to sleep," said her trainer Joseph Cotton.

After weathering the storm in the first round, with every punch Donvana's confidence grew.  In the 3rd round, Lee scored a knocked down Sellers.  "I was like I'm going to come back up with a right, her hand was already down so I just went ahead and hit her with that straight right. I thought she wasn't going to get back up but she did.  Like I said, she was a monster."

That knock down was enough to give Lee the win and the next night she would win the title and became the new Super Heavyweight Amateur Champion.  "Roy Jones' camp was there and they congratulated me," she said.

Lee trains at the Paxton gym in Shreveport and says she loves the family atmosphere it offers.  "They are more than just coaches, they are like my best friends.  Whenever I needed help on something they were there teaching me right from wrong even when I don't want to listen."

That kind of loyalty reminds Lee of her childhood when her mother, who was a single parent, worked to provide for Donvana and her younger brothers.  Lee said "They travel with me everywhere I go I am my brothers keeper."

Lee has taken that roll personally and the fight she wants to win most is raising her brothers the right way.  "I'm going to make sure that they look up to me as the example.  I'm the big sister they are going to look to me when they are in trouble.  I'm going to make sure I'm saying the right things and doing the right things so they can follow my example."
