Tucson reached the 3 monsoon dew point days

Posted: Updated:

Although the numbers start going into the monsoon record books each June 15, the big rain doesn't generally arrive until the muggy monsoon dew points take over Arizona. Monsoon days for Tucson are when the dew point averages 54° or higher. The old way of defining the start of the monsoon was when there were 3 monsoon dew point days in a row. On average, that generally happened at the beginning of July and it signified the start of widespread flooding downpours. This year, Tucson reached this mark at the start of July.

Below is the July dew point tracker from the Tucson National Weather Service. The 3 monsoon dew point days occurred July 2, 3, and 4 as a surge of tropical moisture moved into Arizona with the help of a hurricane and tropical storm spinning off the west coast of Mexico. These are also the days the downpours started in Southeast Arizona, with some areas picking up over an inch of rain in one day. Check rain totals in your neighborhood by clicking here.
