The UNCW Police Department is currently investigating the theft of the bronze seahawk statue located outside the entrance to the Warwick Center on UNCW's main campus.
It was first reported missing Saturday morning.
Police believe the statue was removed sometime between Friday evening and early Saturday morning.
The statue was mounted on a granite base and was broken off near the bird's talons. The statue was valued at $70,000 in 2003.
Members of the UNCW community are outraged about the theft. Bob O'Quinn said his mother and several members of his family attended the school.
"I think it's absolutely ridiculous. It's a testament to ignorance," O'Quinn said. "There's absolutely no reason to de-face anything like that. It's actually fairly infuriating."
This isn't the first time the statue has been stolen. It disappeared in July of 2003 and was later discovered at a local apartment complex. The statue was reattached on September 4, 2003. The thief (or thieves) was never caught.
UNCW Police are currently reviewing the video feed from an outdoor camera located near the statue for any clues about the theft.
