Springfield men arraigned on manslaughter charges after running onto I-91

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Two Springfield men who ran onto a highway to retrieve couch cushions that fell from their pickup truck were arraigned on manslaughter charges.

Jose Nieves Cruz and Rafael Perez, junior pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday morning in Hampden superior court.

Police said the men were moving a couch when the cushions fell off on interstate 91 north in Longmeadow on November 10.

17-year-old Skyler Anderson-Coughlin, of Springfield, was killed when he swerved to avoid the men and cushions, and struck a tractor-trailer.

Cruz and Perez were released today on their own recognizance.
