Springfield firefighters made an interesting discovery Saturday night when called to fight a blaze on Massachusetts Avenue.
According to Dennis Leger, aide to fire Commissioner Joseph Conant, around 8 p.m. firefighters responded to a third floor fire at a multi-family home.
They later discovered a large marijuana growing operation which prompted investigation from Springfield police.
In order to continue investigation, animal control was called in to help remove six pit bull dogs that were on the first floor.
Firefighters estimate the damage to the building is $25,000 to $50,000.
Two residents were left homeless. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
