Holyoke police arrested 40-year-old Jorge Rodriguez Nieves in connection with the Sunday morning stabbing death of 33-year-old Angel David Morales.
Nieves was arraigned in Holyoke District Court Monday morning and pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. He's being held without right to bail.
Police were called to Las Chicas market on Appleton Street in Holyoke Sunday morning to find Morales with a single stab wound to his neck. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center and pronounced dead.
Police said the two men were arguing when the suspect pulled out a knife.
Around 11 p.m. on Sunday police found Nieves in Springfield. He was arrested and taken into custody.
A group of friends left notes, flowers and lit candles at the scene Monday morning to remember morales.
"It's just like losing my brother," said Kenneth Torres, a friend of the victim.
Torres and his brother Anthony said they knew the victim well and saw him every day.
"It feels, I don't know, it doesn't feel very good," said Anthony Torres.
Anthony Torres said he doesn't feel unsafe, but he can't say the same for his family.
"They feel a little threatened," said Anthony Torres.
This marks Holyoke's first homicide of the year. Nieves' pretrial hearing is scheduled for August 19. Police say the incident is not gang related.
