Chicopee fire chief retiring after four decades

Posted: Updated:

Chicopee Fire Chief Stephen Burkott is leaving the department.

The 41-year veteran has been with the department for his entire career.

Burkott says he actually made the decision in January but held off making the announcement because of the turmoil in the police department.

The chief will stay on until a successor is chosen.

Burkott has served as chief for the past 12 years.

He says the decision was tough and he will miss everything about his job.
