VCU Police ranked #1 in nation for DUI crackdown efforts

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Virginia Commonwealth University is being hailed as the number one university in the nation for its traffic safety efforts, especially on DUI crackdowns.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police just ranked VCU Police as the best at keeping students safe on the roads near campus.

VCU officers stage several DUI checkpoints in the city throughout the year, and their "Win or Lose" cruiser is a mobile billboard promoting taking a taxi instead of driving drunk.

VCU Police Chief John Venuti said, "I think a lot of our success here at VCU Police has really been about innovation and collaboration."

VCU police work regularly with state and city police as well. The chief said most of the DUI arrests in their area are not students.
