GILL, MA (WSHM) -
An uptick in suicide deaths on the French King Bridge in the town of Gill is leading town officials there to push for new safety efforts.
Two people have died so far this year jumping off the bridge and town officials said the deaths also pose a risk for first responders who are often rushing in to recover those people.
Currently there are no safety measures around the bridge over the Connecticut River like nets or fences.
Gill Police Chief David Hastings said that needs to change.
"Right now the towns, both Gill and Erving, are looking forward to talking with the state about trying to put some preventive measures on the bridge so that it would not allow people to jump off it. Some type of fencing might be the best way to accommodate that," Hastings explained.
In addition to the two people who have died jumping off that bridge this year, five others have survived dives off the bridge.
