SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A 22-year-old college student was assaulted after she took pictures of children playing in a water park for a photography class assignment.

Springfield police were dispatched to Van Horn Park at 5 p.m. Tuesday after a female victim called police and stated she had just been assaulted by another female, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

"As she was taking the pictures she was approached by an outraged female," Delaney said, adding that the woman demanded the student delete the photos of her children in a threatening manner.

The student, who did not want to have a confrontation, turned to leave the park, but as she was walking away the woman punched her in the face twice and pulled her to the ground, Delaney said.

The attacker, who was later identified as Victoria M. Torres, 32, of 211 William St., Springfield, kicked the student while she was down and stomped her face, Delaney said.

The woman then grabbed the victim's $4,000 Canon Mark III camera in an unsuccessful attempt to pull it from her neck.

Torres fled the scene, but was spotted by responding officers on Beauchamp Street where she was placed under arrest. The victim was able to positively identify Torres and police took witness statements, Delaney said.

Police charged Torres with assault with intent to rob, assault and battery, and assault and battery by means (shod foot), Delaney said.

Torres was due in Springfield District Court Wednesday.
