In response to Gov. Deval Patrick's recent proposal to possibly house illegal immigrant children at Westover Air Reserve Base, citizens spoke out on Sunday.
Despite some heavy rain, nearly 50 demonstrators took to the Route 33 rotary to peacefully protest against the bringing of illegal immigrants to the city.
A little more than a week ago, the governor announced that Westover, as well as Joint Base Cape Cod, would be recommended to the federal government as locations to temporarily house the immigrant children.
"We need to worry about the citizens of the United States of America before we worry about any other countries," said city resident Lucy Toussaint.
"We know in the past there's been so many immigration abuses," said Richard Orlick, a protestor from South Hadley. "When someone comes here, it's not our job to provide them with opportunity."
City and state officials have opposed the governor's proposal, but Patrick said it is now up to the federal government.
Patrick has turned down an invitation to meet with officials in Chicopee.
