Springfield police arrested a man after a shooting late Tuesday night.
Christopher McKenzie, 23, was arrested on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm, assault and battery and improper storage of a firearm following an incident in front of 174 Massachusetts Ave.
Police say they responded to a "shots fired" call at 10:40 p.m. and discovered a 24-year-old male with a single gunshot wound to the leg.
While providing first aid to the victim, officers were told that someone known as "Chris" shot the man after a verbal and physical confrontation that stemmed from a fight between the victim and his girlfriend the day before.
Witnesses told police that "Chris" had driven up to the Massachusetts Avenue home to confront the victim. One of the victim's friends had intervened and began beating up the attacker, also taking a gun that was in his belt. "Chris" went back to his car to get another gun and shot the victim in the leg before driving off.
A short time later, officers responded to another nearby disturbance at 142 Eastern Ave. and located the blue Chevy Malibu that the witnesses say the shooter was driving. McKenzie was inside the car.
Police also found a .45 caliber handgun in the vehicle, as well as a box of bullets. Witnesses at the scene of the shooting positively identified McKenzie as the shooter.
The victim of the shooting was released from a local hospital after treatment.
