A 20-year-old engineering student at UMass is dead after being hit by a car in Amherst.

Officials with the Northwestern District Attorney's Office tell CBS 3 that Hannah Frilot and a friend were walking on North East Street shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday when they were hit by a Toyota RAV4.

Investigators say the 63-year-old female driver of the SUV stopped immediately and called 911.

The other pedestrian was not seriously hurt.

Investigators are still trying to determine the exact cause of the accident.
