Holyoke officer bitten by own K-9 in the field

Posted: Updated:

A case of mistaken identity led to a police dog accidentally biting his officer Sunday afternoon.

Holyoke police told CBS 3 that Officer Matt Welch and his dog, Ryker, were responding to a purse snatching call at the K-Mart plaza on Route 5.

Welch and Ryker were pursuing the suspect behind the buildings with several witnesses nearby.

Police said Welch slipped due to the terrain.

They said Ryker was confused by the commotion and bit Welch on the leg.

Welch was taken to Holyoke Medical Center and treated and released for bite wounds.

For precautionary reasons, he will be off-duty for a week while he recovers.

Police said Ryker was evaluated by the head K-9 handler from the state police and was cleared to continue working with the department.
