Annual hockey tournament raises cardiac awareness

Posted: Updated:

This weekend and next, the topic of sudden cardiac arrest will be front and center in the city, as the fourth annual Kevin Major Hockey Tournament is under way at the Amelia Park Ice Arena.

The tournament is played in honor of Kevin Major, who at the age of 19 died from an enlarged heart that was never diagnosed.

Twenty-six teams are taking part over the two weekend event.

Kevin Major's parents told CBS 3 that they continue to be amazed by the support of the hockey community.

"Everybody here is playing for Kevin, for one reason or another," said Pat Major, Kevin Major's father.  "Whether they played with or against Kevin, they're friends with someone who played against or with Kevin, just to see everybody come together for these two weekends for hockey is just incredible."

When the tournament picks up again next weekend, there will be a community day on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., where the KEVS Foundation and Noble Hospital will host a free CPR and automated external defibrillator event.
