Two men were arrested after a heated argument over a stolen iPhone led to a shooting Saturday morning.
Police were called to the intersection of Commonwealth and Belmont avenues about 10:30 a.m. after two men were involved in a fight that led to multiple gunshots being fired, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.
One of the suspects committed a robbery the day before the altercation, which police were able to link him to, and the other suspect was found in possession of PCP, Delaney said.
When police arrived on scene they spotted the two men matching the description a caller gave entering the home at 193 Commonwealth Ave. Officers went inside searching for the two men and spoke with a witness who said the argument, which started over the stolen cell phone, lead to a violent confrontation, Delaney said.
The officers could hear the argument continuing in a back room of the residence and were able to located the two suspects. Both men admitted to the fight and firing the handgun, Delaney said.
Police charged Joel E. Fernandez, 22, of 279 Oak Grove Ave., Springfield, with discharging a firearm, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm with three prior violent offences, and possession of ammunition after officers found 49 rounds of ammo, according to an arrest report.
Fernandez was also charged with larceny over $250 for stealing $750 in cash and a Direct Express Bank Card on Friday from a victim on Oak Grove Avenue. The stolen items were recovered at the scene by the officers, Delaney said.
Police charged Juan A. Ortiz, 20, of 202 Canon Circle, Springfield, with carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition, assault by means of a deadly weapon, carrying a firearm with an outstanding warrant and possession of a class B substance after police found PCP on him, Delaney said.
Ortiz was also charged on a warrant for intimidation of a witness and assault and battery, he said.
