Montague police warn of IRS phone scam

Posted: Updated:
MONTAGUE, MA (WSHM) -

It seems that phone scams are targeting residents in every corner of Western Massachusetts. And now Montague police want to warn people of yet another one.

Police say the scammer calls claiming to be from the IRS. Oftentimes, the number displayed on the caller ID may show up as a Washington, DC area number, such as 202-643-7984.

The caller says that the victim owes the government money and immediate payment must be made or the victim will be hit with penalties and taxes.

The family member of a police sergeant with the department received the call and the officer was able to listen in and said the caller sounded like they were from India.

Police are warning residents to immediately hang up, not share any information and contact your local police department.
