Undocumented family finds sanctuary in south side church

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

An undocumented mother who's been living in Tucson is now living in a south side church.

Rosa Robles Loreto, her husband and their two sons entered the Southside Presbyterian Church on Thursday night. It will be their home for the next several weeks, perhaps months.

The family has made Tucson their homes for years now, but they all are from Mexico and undocumented.Robles Loreto was due to be deported tomorrow and her husband is in removal proceedings. Their children, ages 11 and 8, will qualify for deferred deportation action as Dreamers.

Southside Presbyterian has a long history of providing sanctuary for immigrants. The pastor says the church will work to get immigration officials to see that Robles Loreto qualifies for prosecutorial discretion. She says even though the family is here illegally, the goal is to keep them together.

"I would like to say to them my life is here. My family is here. I've been here for 15 years and I have nothing in Mexico. I don't have any life there,” Robles Loreto said.

“We don't think it's a crime for a mother to want to provide for her children and her husband. We're responding to the call of our faith to love our neighbor as ourselves… to stand alongside families that are suffering,” said Pastor Alison Harrington of Southside Presbyterian Church.

This is the second time the church took someone in this summer. Daniel Ruiz left the church in June when immigration authorities granted him a one year stay from being deported.

A memo from the director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement outlines prosecutorial discretion for some people who are in the U.S. illegally. The pastor of the church says Loreto can stay in the U.S. because of the policy because she pays taxes and cares for her kids.
