An elderly woman was hospitalized after a mountain bike that wasn't properly locked into a bike rack on the back of an SUV took a "ghost ride" down Interstate 91 southbound and collided with her car Monday.
State police and EMTs responded to the accident scene nearby the Holyoke Mall exit around noontime.
The Volkswagen Passat station wagon involved suffered heavy front-end damage and laid immobile in the middle lane of the highway surrounded by scattered glass and debris following the incident.
Traffic on I-91 was backed up for miles as police closed down all southbound lanes of the highway with the exception of the break-down lane.
State troopers investigating the accident could be seen photographing the vehicles involved around 12:30 p.m. Troopers eventually returned the bike involved to the driver of the red SUV that lost it. That vehicle was a late model Chevy Suburban.
The victim did not suffer serious injuries.
