PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Several children were rescued from inside a Phoenix house covered with dog feces, extreme filth and rotting food, police said.
A police neighborhood enforcement team met up with authorities from the Arizona Department of Child Safety at the home in the 3800 block of W. Grant Street early Monday afternoon. State officials were there to conduct an investigation into a child neglect complaint that the children had been left alone.
The workers told police they could hear children's voices inside but no one answered the door after knocking for several minutes.
Police said they could smell rotting food and feces from outside the home and observed barking dogs running around inside, according to a court document.
Officers forced their way inside and discovered the children's mother, Ashlee Carleton, 24, and her boyfriend, Casey Derkye, 26, who lives in the home, in the master bedroom, court paperwork stated.
Police said the rotting food and animal feces were found inside every room, including the master bedroom and the kids' room.
The refrigerator contained very little food and what was inside appeared to be rotting, according to the probable cause statement.
Derkye was arrested. Police said he gave them a false birth date and an alternate spelling of both his first and last name. His true identity was soon discovered.
Carleton was booked into jail on three counts of child abuse.
