Police: 7-year-old hit by tram at Maymont Park

Posted: Updated:

Police were called to the Japanese Gardens at Maymont Park for a reported tram accident Saturday.

They say around 1:58 p.m., a 7-year-old boy at the park with his parents bent over and was struck on the top of the head. He was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Maymont is working with staff to investigate the cause of the incident. To ensure the safety of other guests, the tram is temporarily closed while Maymont conducts a full assessment of the situation.

"We first want to offer our thoughts to the family, and we are hoping for a speedy recovery for the young boy who was injured in today's accident," said Norman Burns, executive director of the Maymont Foundation. "While our response was to help the injured boy today, we now need to turn our attention to the cause of this event."
