HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Crews spent most of the day Sunday uprighting and extracting a yacht to determine what caused a leak that contributed to its sinking.

"Notorious," previously christened "Serano II" in 1953, had been listing in the waters of Ditto Landing in Huntsville for several days. Witnesses said they began seeing the yacht take on water as early as Thursday night.

The yacht has an illustrious history, having been once owned by President Gerald Ford, as well as an alleged mob boss, and even actor Charlton Heston, who lived on the yacht while filming the movie "Planet of the Apes."

Once fully extracted, crews will be able to examine the hull and better understand what caused the leak. Work had been in progress by the yacht's owner, who was out of town when the sinking began, to remodel the 'Notorious.' It is currently unclear if those plans will continue.
