TPD: Suspected carjacker leads police on chase

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A police chase involving a man who carjacked a vehicle on the south side had a baby in the backseat, according to Tucson Police.

Tucson News Now spoke exclusively to the mother of the baby.

Claudia Arvicu said her 1-year-old son Eli was in the backseat and was frantic about what happened to him.

Police said the suspect stole the car at a Food City parking lot near Irvington and Campbell around 4:30 p.m.

Arvicu says they have dark tinted windows, so it's possible that he didn't even see the baby in the back.

Police say the suspect drove a little bit then dropped the baby off at a random apartment complex. He then crashed that car near Drexel and 6th. Police say he ran into another residence and stole the keys to another vehicle. Police say the suspect led police on a city-wide chase.

Officer Brandon Tatum tells Tucson News Now the suspect was driving erratically, running red lights and even driving on the wrong side of the road.

Tatum says the suspect crashed the stolen vehicle near 32nd street and 6th and was taken into custody.

Arvicu says her mind was racing the entire time.

“I was worried because the car actually flipped. So I was worried that my son was in there. It's every mother's nightmare. I'm still shaking, but I feel relief that my son is with me.  

She says she was inside of LA Insurance and her husband was inside the car with the baby. Arvicu says she needed the VIN number to her car, so she asked her husband to run in and give it to her. That's when the suspect stole the car.

“When I first got him, he was overwhelmed, he was crying, of course. He was crying with the lady, who he didn't know. But after he was with me for a minute or so, he got better once he got candy and cookies.”

Tatum said the suspect is in the hospital with injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
