Springfield police took three people in custody following a Thursday afternoon shooting on Walnut Street, but charged one man after a brief foot chase.
A Springfield police officer was on road detail on Queen Street directing traffic when he heard six or seven gunshots fired near James and Walnut streets. The officer called for backup and a team of officers responded to the area immediately, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.
Officers spotted the suspect running away from the scene as they converged on the area. Police also saw the man throw the gun he was carrying as he was scaling fences in an attempt to elude police, Delaney said.
Police chased the man to Atwood Place where they apprehended him. Officers recovered the .22-caliber handgun the man threw as he ran from authorities, Delaney said.
Nicorie Adams, 20, of 140 Chestnut St., Springfield, was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition and discharging a firearm. He was also charged with a parole warrant, according to an arrest report.
Adams was scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court Friday.
