Birmingham Fire and Rescue officials recovered the body of a man who was buried under dirt at a construction site at 24th Street Southwest and Mayfield Ave in Ensley on Saturday.

Birmingham Fire Battalion Chief Buddy Wilks says the 31-year-old man was doing plumbing work about 10 to 12 feet in a trench when the ground gave way, trapping him underneath.

The coroner's office has identified the man as Ladonte McCruter of Bessemer.

Officials say over 50 workers were brought in to get the man out. After a six hour search they reached his body.

Authorities say it took them so long to find the man because the ground was very soft.

"We tried to secure the area and make it as safe as possible. It's a very dangerous operation and it has to go slow. Very tedious operation because with the dirt in there, [we] have to secure the dirt so it doesn't collapse," Wilks explained.

Officials say other men were working when the ground gave in but they managed to escape without injuries.

Neighbors say a home was being built on the site.
