A security guard in north Charlotte is facing charges after police say he fired his gun at a man who smashed the window of a vehicle in an apartment complex parking lot.

Officers say the security guard, 32-year-old Michael Vincent McCoy, was working along the 900 block of Forty Niner Avenue late Saturday night.

That's when police were called about a man smashing out the window of a vehicle that was parked in the parking lot.

According to police, someone flagged down McCoy who attempted to confront the man, later identified as 20-year-old Juan Carlos Escobar Jr.

Officers say Escobar attempted to drive away, but McCoy stood in front of the vehicle to keep pedestrians, who were walking nearby, from getting hit.

That's when officers say Escobar began to accelerate towards the exit gate and McCoy.

McCoy pulled out his gun and shot at Escobar's vehicle while moving out of the way.

Officers say they found Escobar driving recklessly on the sidewalk and stopped the vehicle a short distance away. He was then arrested.

He confessed to damaging the vehicle and was cobar was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, careless and reckless driving and damage to property.

Officers say Escobar received minor injuries from broken glass during the incident with McCoy.

According to police, McCoy fired a second shot at Escobar after the "vehicle no longer posed an imminent threat to the safety of Mr. McCoy or anyone else."

He was discharging a firearm at an occupied conveyance and discharging a firearm in the city limits. He turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office on Sunday.
