Amherst police arrest driver of car vs. tree crash

Posted: Updated:

Two people were taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield on Monday night after an alleged drunk driver crashed a car into a tree directly in front of an Amherst home.

Amherst police were notified of the accident at 706 South East St. shortly after 10 p.m.

The car involved was badly damaged, but police said the occupants suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police charged the driver, identified as Ailton N. Correia, 22, of 188 East Hadley Rd., unit 115E, Amherst, with OUI (liquor) resulting in serious bodily injury, failure to stay within marked lanes and speeding, according to Amherst police Lt. Ronald A. Young.

Alcohol and excessive speed contributed to the accident, Young said.
