An alert neighbor called police after witnessing a man allegedly break into a car in the city's McNight neighborhood early Tuesday morning.
Police responded to 135 Westminster St. at about 4:15 a.m. after the neighbor, who was outside smoking a cigarette, watched the man break into a green Ford Escape, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.
"Instead of just watching, the neighbor called 911 and the cops were there instantly," Delaney said.
Police spotted the suspect and arrested him without incident. Officers found him in possession of lottery tickets and CDs that he had just stolen, Delaney said.
"This was a very good arrest because the public cooperated with the police and called 911 right away when they witnessed a crime," Delaney said. "Never assume that somebody else will call."
Police charged Luis Caez, 39, of 174 High St., Springfield, with breaking and entering into a motor vehicle (felony), according to an arrest report.
