SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A resident struck a gas line on Paulk Terrace, causing the evacuation of several nearby homes Monday morning, according to Dennis Leger, Executive Aide to the Fire Commissioner.

Leger told CBS 3 that a resident was taking down a tent that was set up in his front yard for a party on Sunday. The tent was set up for the entire weekend, but the leak did not occur until it was being taken down Monday.

The Springfield Fire Department and Columbia Gas responded 103 Paulk Terrace about 11 a.m. The road was closed to traffic.

CBS 3 Springfield has a crew on Paulk Terrace and will bring you updates as they are made available.
