SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A Connecticut man who was shot in Springfield's East Forest Park neighborhood early Sunday morning died at Baystate Medical Center Tuesday, police officials said.

Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney identified the victim as Demarcus Johnson, 38, of Deborah Drive, East Hartford.

"This is now a murder and detectives under the command of Captain Thomas Trites are continuing their around-the-clock investigation into this shooting," Delaney said.

Witnesses told police Johnson appeared to be pulled over on Overlook Drive attempting to fix his 2006 Cadillac sedan prior to the shooting, according to Delaney.

"The neighborhood near Overlook Drive and Island Pond Road is considered safe and this murder should not be looked upon as a random crime," Delaney said.

Detectives continued to follow leads into the city's 11th homicide of the year on Wednesday, but no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information pertaining to this homicide is asked to call the Springfield Police Department Bureau at 413-787-6355 or anonymously text-a-tip.
