SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Firefighters battled a fatal house fire in the City's East Forest Park neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the single-family house is located at 40 Burnside Terrace, which is off of Sumner Avenue. Neighbors said a mother and her son lived in the home.

The mother, who was handicapped, was home at the time of the fire. She was treated by medical crews after she was taken out of the home by firefighters, but she died from injuries she sustained in the fire.

Neighbor Suzanne Szczepanek said she saw one person emerge from the home screaming for help.

The man said his mother was in a wheelchair inside the house and needed to be rescued. Szczepanek entered the home in an attempt to rescue the victim, but she was stopped once she inhaled the thick smoke inside of the house.
