SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Parents, students and community leaders are working together to increase attendance at Springfield schools. The GradNation Summit features former students who succeeded after graduation.

The goal is try to get to a 90 percent national graduate rate by 2020.

A Springfield native joined the summit to share his message about this problem.

"We have a moral and imperative obligation to our children to make sure they can achieve their dream. Not only is it a moral obligation, but it's something we have to do to make sure we stay economically competitive," said Michael Smith, the keynote speaker.

Springfield Superintendent Daniel Warwick said it takes a community to raise a child.

"Building bridges, extended learning time, interventions that we think make a difference for our kids because the same old paradigm just isn't going to work," Warwick said.
